Greek honey: Present and future
Greeks have been involved in beekeeping for many years (Crete, Attica, Kea, etc.). They have maintained traditions since then. There are about 15.000 beekeepers in Greece today dispersed all over the country, working with about 1.2000.000 hives.
Some 3.000 of them are professional beekeepers (they own more than 15o hives and earn at least 50% of their annual income this way). Meanwhile, the average consumption of honey in Greece is 1.700g per person per year, one of the highest, if not the highest, in the world.
