Asphodel or King`s Spear
Asphodeline lutea (King`s Spear, Yellow Asphodel) is a perennial plant native to the eastern Mediterranean. In Greece, it is called `Asphodylos` or `Sperdoukli`. It has been associated with the Asphodel of the underworld. It was highly valued by the ancient Greeks, who roasted the roots like potatoes and ate them with salt and oil or mashed them with figs. It has hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties. The blooms are highly attractive to bees.
